The Forest Preserve District of Will County is accepting resumes for a GIS Intern position. Under the supervision of Planning and GIS Coordinator, this position is responsible for assisting with the implementation and maintenance of the District’s GIS database as well as preparing maps or District Staff.
Job Description:
The GIS Intern provides Geographical Information System (GIS) assistance to the GIS Program with the implementation and support of the District’s geographical information database, and to prepare maps for District Staff and Departments.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Create maps and data for District Staff, Departments, and special projects as assigned.
2. Assist the Planning and GIS Coordinator with implementation and maintenance of the District’s GIS.
3. Assists in the creation and maintenance of the District’s GIS layers in Multiuser Geodatabase.
4. Assist Public Affairs Department with Geocaching permit review as needed.
5. Geocode addresses for school programs and other projects as needed.
6. Assist GIS Program with digitizing and verifying legal descriptions and surveys using GIS COGO tools for all District properties as needed.
7. Fill GIS data requests from other agencies and organizations as needed.
8. Perform data acquisition, collection, and verification tasks.
9. Perform research on GIS related products, trends, and projects.
10. Attend conferences, meetings and seminars relevant to the District’s use of GIS as needed.
11. Train end-users of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and various GIS software applications.
12. Develop and customize ArcPad forms including dropdowns for staff GPS data collection.
13. Participate as a team member on GIS Management Team and District-wide teams as assigned.
14. Perform other functions as assigned or required.
15. Must possess and maintain a current and valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Familiarity with GIS and associated hardware, software, and peripherals; GPS; databases; and other current technologies, specifically:
- ArcGIS Desktop 10x
- ArcPad 10
- File and SDE Geodatabases
- Microsoft Access
- Microsoft Excel
2. Exhibit skills in map creation and editing, and projecting data. Skills in relational databases, and python scripting a plus.
Education and Experience:
1. Bachelors Degree or currently enrolled in a college program specializing in computer science, geography, or geographic information systems.
2. Knowledge in ESRI software, GPS data collection and correction, GIS standards, terms, principles, projections, and mapping.
