The Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s Division of Transportation System Development (DTSD) is currently seeking to fill a current vacancy and future vacancies for Engineering Specialist Transportation Advanced positions that serve as a Regional Survey Data Coordinator within one of eight regional office locations. 

A vacancy currently exists within DTSD’s North Central Region. The headquarters for this position will be either Rhinelander (510 Hanson Lake Rd, 54501) or Wisconsin Rapids (1681 Second Ave S, 54495), and will be chosen by the selected candidate at the point of hire.

Job Duties:

Under the general direction of the Regional Technical Services supervisor, these positions are responsible for overseeing, reviewing and/or processing, and archiving the Regional Office’s field survey measurements and descriptions for both in-house and consultant surveys to ensure the highest level of quality for all survey data and information. These positions functions as the Regional authority to determine the acceptability of that data and provides direction for the corrective actions that need to be taken by the appropriate parties. It requires comprehensive knowledge of all phases of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Automated Survey System and the processes, practices and procedures associated with land surveying. The positions provides properly reduced and formatted surface models and design survey data to designers, consultant engineering firms, and contractors for facility design and construction coordination for the Project Development Process. Positions functions as the technical expert providing advice and guidance to construction and design staff related to digital terrain models and GPS machine controlled project grading. In addition, some positions may assistant the Survey Coordinator and performs back up duties when necessary or lead a survey crew on assignments when required to do so.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of survey coordinate systems and the application for converting coordinates to the appropriate datum.
  • Knowledge of GIS applications.
  • Extensive knowledge of trigonometry and survey mathematics.
  • Knowledge of land surveying mathematics and complex computations including traverse adjustments, closure, area and right of way curve computations, coordinate adjustments, and transformations
  • Extensive knowledge of land surveying principles.
  • Knowledge of automated map design, production and geographic information system technology.
  • Ability to interpret roadway plans, plats, private and legal survey documents, flight design and other maps.
  • Knowledge of portions of the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction.
  • Extensive knowledge of traffic safety and biohazard safety procedures.
  • Ability to calculate and measure pay items on construction projects.
  • Ability to communicate job tasks effectively to crewmembers.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain positive public relations with property owners and the general public.
  • Working knowledge of personal computer survey applications.
  • Ability to effectively exercise independent judgment.
  • Knowledge of Department and Region policies.
  • Knowledge of leadership principles.
  • Ability to lead and train staff.

• Conducting historical survey research using government records;
• Establishing electronic data naming conventions in accordance with software-specific protocols.
