Senior GIS Design/Developer

HNTB is currently seeking a Sr Design / Developer in our Ames, IA office. This position leads application support services for existing geospatial systems; ensures quality control standards; applies national data standards and best practice to ensure data compliance across the organization; evaluates trends, anticipates problems, and develops procedures to reduce system errors and enhance functionality and stability.

Responsibilities

• Leads development of geospatial applications to assist with the decision making process, and business requirements; coordinates geospatial development projects; prioritizes development of component layers and structure of data.
• Coordinates and prioritizes plans to exchange, share and integrate digital data; provides continuous development, operation and maintenance of the GIS, including component layers of the system database, and system hardware and software; leads or assists with implementation designs
• Supports and interacts with customers or stakeholders; establishes and defines customer requirements and translates into potential product improvements and new application designs; evaluates feedback and plans for future releases
• Contribute to the creation of business application specifications, develop and enhance geospatial applications, and perform business analysis and quality assurance testing
• Fixes bugs found through in-house testing as well as those reported by customers at client location; troubleshoots and resolves technical issues
• Writes documentation ranging from API reference to application code to template apps to tutorials; develops programming specifications, logic flow charts, and process diagrams
• Follows geospatial industry trends and evolution to ensure users have the best resources at their disposal; helps define the product roadmap and provides guidance on the same
• Serves as subject matter expert on the geospatial technology; provides leadership in the deployment and use of geospatial technology; identifies and researches technical issues, and recommends solutions.
• Provides technical leadership, guidance and training.
• Reports progress and status of assigned tasks to project managers, client teams or agency leadership

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree with a strong preference towards computer and base sciences or mathematics
• 6 or more years of experience developing geospatial systems
• Required knowledge of principles of mapping, global positioning systems and usage of aerial photography and satellite imaging, theory, principles and practices of geographic information systems, including computerized data compilation techniques, ESRI database management systems, graphics applications and overlays, and spatial models for computer analysis, administration and maintenance principles of network operating domains and complex relational databases, database systems integration, quality assurance procedures, and documentation of data sets, system access and security guidelines and procedures; hardware and application troubleshooting techniques.
• Required skill in analyzing technical issues and implementing solutions to technical problems, using Esri application suite programs, Oracle databases, and application programming languages, utilizing computer technology to plan, organize and conduct research studies, reading, understanding, developing, manipulating, and analyzing geographic information in a variety of data formats and projections, understanding and working with data from multiple public and private sources, compilation, analysis, and presentation of technical and statistical information in reports and maps, performing accurate data entry and mathematical calculations, maintaining complex technical records and files, ability to multi-task, self-direct, conform to shifting priorities, and works in a team environment, operating a personal computer utilizing specialized GIS application and file management procedures, and following verbal and written instructions.
• Passion for and understanding of design patterns, standards and user experience
• Strong working experience with the following languages and frameworks: ArcGIS Server Java Script API, Python, HTML 5, CSS, DOJO, JQuery in a .net Environment, Oracle and RESTFUL services
• Strong working experience with the following application: ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Desktop and ArcSDE
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
• Strong oral and written communication skills
