The GIS (or Geospatial) Technician is an entry-level position. The fundamental reason this position exists is to develop and maintain geographic information systems (GIS) datasets. Most duties assigned are routine, involving editing spatial datasets, data processing, quality assurance, and potentially the generation of maps.
Job Duties
- Supports the maintenance and development of various GIS datasets. This includes editing datasets, correcting discrepancies, and interpreting source data in order to convert non-digital sources to geographically-based formats.
- Reviews data and performs quality assurance checks for adherence to quality specifications as required by client.
- May provide assistance with other GIS-related tasks as necessary, such as client support, mapping, and database entry.
Education, Experience, Knowledge and Skills
- High School Diploma or GED is required; Bachelor’s Degree in Geography or a related field with specialization in GIS, and/or GIS Certification, is preferred. Other combinations of experience and education may be substituted.
- 1-2 years of GIS-related experience, including coursework, internships, and work experience.
- Knowledge of relative subject matter is preferred.
- Receives general direction and is competent to perform most aspects of the job independently.
- Must be proficient in a number of computer applications, but must specifically possess GIS software skills; knowledge of ESRI products and MS Office is necessary.
- Must have knowledge of basic GIS and cartographic concepts.
- Has excellent problem solving and decision-making skills.
- Possess a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Good organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Basic understanding of relational databases.
