GIS Intern

Description

The GIS Planning Intern will assist the Community Development Department with the preparation of maps, reports, geographic modeling, presentations, creating and editing data, and additional graphic aids using ArcGIS. The GIS Planning Intern will assist the department staff learn new GIS skills and best practices.

Essential Job Functions

•  Preparation of maps, reports, modeling, presentations, creating and editing data and other graphic aids using ArcGIS
• Working on land use planning projects, comprehensive plan issues and updates
• Assisting with projects related to historic preservation, parks and recreation, zoning, forestry, code enforcement and other departments as assigned

Qualifications

• High School Graduate and valid driver’s license
• Completing coursework at the senior undergraduate or graduate level in Geography, Land Use Planning, Conversation, Engineering or other related field.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Proficiency in ArcGIS software
• Ability to teach others new ideas and skills.
• Problem solving ability
• Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed primarily in an office environment which includes exposure to computer screens. Primary functions require:

• Sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting
• Sit and use computer equipment on a continuous basis
• On a frequent basis must be able to stand, walk, sit, talk and reach with hands and arms
• Operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard
