POSITION SUMMARY

The GIS Conservation Intern participates in conservation data and database, maintenance and management. Spatial and tabular data are pervasive in all facets of The Nature Conservancy, from painting a picture of hope for our donors, to identifying where and how we work and measuring the success of our work.  This internship will provide a glimpse across all levels of work at TNC from local, on-the-ground weed management, to participation in a wetland prioritization project that’s part of one of our North America Freshwater Program priorities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Maintains and populates spatial and tabular databases and manual files
  • Produces maps and/or other graphic products and reports
  • Maintains GIS library and/or database products library

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • Data compilation, organization and entry into tabular relational databases, or geographic information systems.
  • Map creation using ESRI products.
  • Spatial analysis to address conservation issues. May be simple one-off analysis with map production, or may include building repeatable modeling processes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience maintaining and populating databases and manual files.
  • Experience producing maps and/or other graphic products and reports.
  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS products, Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and using the Internet.
  • Enrollment or recent graduate in a post high school level program in geography, biology, ecology, social sciences, or related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Performing administrative duties emphasizing detail-oriented and numerical tasks including data entry
  • Database and computer spatial or tabular based management skills including managing, maintaining and populating databases. 
  • Have demonstrated ability to communicate with colleagues to produce a collaborative project outcome.
  • Understanding of ecological principles
