Job Summary
As a GIS Technician, you will provide GIS Data Development by participating in MnGeo’s efforts to publish data, applications, services, and map products to the MN Geospatial Commons. This position also provides GIS support to various MnGeo projects as well as support state agency end users in operation of GIS software and MnGeo’s services, monitoring and responding to MnGeo external customer feedback mechanisms.
Responsibilities will include:
- Assist with the development and application of technical procedures for publishing geospatial resources on the MN Geospatial Commons
- Consult on the design, development, and maintenance of the MnGeo Commons user interface and content management, seeking optimal performance for the broad community of GIS stakeholders
- Use modern GIS software packages to test and evaluate metadata, data, applications and services published on the MnGeo Commons
- Provide GIS support to various MnGeo projects
- Monitor and respond to MnGeo external comments and questions submitted on the MnGeo Commons
- Diagnose and solve user issues with modern GIS software, data, and services
- Prepare data and procedures for testing existing and new MnGeo services and applications
Candidates must clearly demonstrate all of the following qualifications in their resume:
Position requires a minimum of two (2) years of professional work experience in an IT related field that includes:
- Experience with Esri GIS Software, including ArcGIS 10.x
- Familiarity with web publishing
- Experience with markup and schema languages such as HTML and XML
- Familiarity with geographic terminology, coordinate systems, map projections, map-based analysis, and principles of cartography
- Knowledge and experience with geocoding and spatial analysis
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Geography or related field
- Higher education coursework in Geography, GIS, and related science (ex: Geology, Hydrology, and Soils)
- Strong working knowledge of development tools such as: HTML, XML, JavaScript and Python
- Strong working knowledge and experience with geocoding and spatial analysis
- Basic familiarity with concepts of statistical significance
- Effective verbal and written skills
