Job Description:
The USDA Forest Service, Eastern Region, Chippewa National Forest is seeking a candidate for a Land Surveyor, GS-1373-9/11 position. This is a permanent, full time position. The purpose of this Outreach Notice is to inform prospective applicants of this upcoming opportunity. Job Duties:
The position will be located in Cass Lake at the Chippewa National Forests Headquarters office. This land surveyor position will have duties both in the field and office.
- Field work typically consists of boundary/cadastral type surveys including, but not limited to: evidence search, corner location using GPS or other surveying equipment, note taking, setting monuments and accessories, posting boundaries, locate and flag boundary lines for timber or other resource projects. Familiarity with surveying equipment is required. Work frequently involves exposure to adverse weather conditions, extremes in temperature, and hazards associated with travel over steep, rocky terrain or heavily forested areas. Use of snowmobiles and ATVs may be required.
- The land surveyor will plan and conduct cadastral surveying projects of a complex nature, usually requiring considerable research, evaluation, and the proper application of pertinent State and Federal laws.
- May serve as a contract inspector and Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR) ensuring compliance with contract specifications on survey projects contracted with private surveying firms.
- Works with other Lands staff on processing actions on trespass and encroachment issues.
- Office work typically consists of records research, documenting field work, preparing preliminary and final survey plats, drawings, reports, legal records, and interprets and writes legal descriptions. Familiarity with surveying software is required and GIS software is preferred.
- The incumbent will make professional contacts to exchange factual and professional information, research survey data, obtain advice and instruction, and to seek permission to conduct field surveys on private lands. Contacts are typically with other surveyors, engineers, resource managers, surveying technicians, landowners, officials of other agencies, and private sector professional land surveyors
- Incumbent has one year from their start date to become licensed as a Land Surveyor pursuant to the laws of the State of Minnesota.
