Job Description

This position is responsible for application of precise technical GIS and engineering skills to support and complete GIS and engineering division projects.  GIS assignments may include preparation of maps for: utilities (storm, sewer, water), community development, assessment, zoning, fire, and other municipal departments and features.  Engineering assignments may include preparation and drafting of engineering drawings and surveys. 

This position will perform approximately 90% of duties in an office setting and 10% of duties out in the field.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

70% – GIS

  • Assist GIS Analyst in preparation of municipal facilities mapping, and mapping of other land based features using ESRI ArcGIS software.
  • Assist GIS Analyst with GIS related software installations and upgrades.
  • Assist City staff with technical support and guidance with GIS related software/websites.
  • May provide training to other employees in the operation of equipment and software.

 30% – CAD/Other

  • Preparation of maps, engineering drawings, and plan sets for public works construction projects incorporating plan and profiles, cross sections, and standard details using AutoCAD Civil 3D computer aided drafting and automated civil design software.  Assist with project specifications and calculations of quantities, cost estimates and assessments.
  • Perform a variety of drafting and mapping operations including preparation of Survey maps, annexation maps, and other mapping related to municipal facilities and projects using computer aided drafting and automated civil design software.
  • May provide training to other employees in the operation of equipment and software.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

Requires an Associate’s degree in GIS, Civil Engineering, or other closely related field and one to three years’ experience, or equivalent combination of degree and related experience in GIS, professional engineering, drafting, or mapping which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job. Testing may be requested to verify required skills. Valid Wisconsin driver’s license required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience and/or training in ArcMap 10.2.2, ArcCatalog 10.2.2, geocoding, layer files, shapefiles, geodatabases, projections, Laserfiche, data analysis, spatial analysis, data conversion, data entry, and general cartographic skills.
  • Ability to create and edit GIS layers on a regular basis to maintain the most current and accurate information.
  • Experience and/or training in Autodesk Civil 3D software or similar.
  • ESRI ArcGIS software, Trimble Survey Controller (or similar) field collection software, GPS and conventional surveying equipment and methods, including total stations and automatic and digital levels.
  • Intermediate Level knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
