Job Summary:

The MnDOT Seeds Program is a student worker program that exists to provide a career track for college students. To be a participant in the Seeds Program, a student must fall within one of the following categories:

  • a minority; or
  • a Recently Separated Veteran (RSV); or
  • economically disadvantaged, or
  • a student with a disability

Job Description:

This position exits to assist the maintenance of, and analysis with, geospatial transportation data in the new Linear Referencing System (LRS) within the existing Geographic Information System (GIS) environment in order to establish and utilize an existing draft “Plan Your Project” interactive MnDOT byway system map online, to test/improve its usefulness with internal and external customers, and to ensure Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements are met.

The position assists with establishing the draft “Plan Your Project” byway interactive map as an online web tool for use by internal and external customers who manage the roads designated as byways. The position is responsible for updating geographic information to ensure geospatial data and maps produced from the “Plan Your Project” interactive MnDOT byway system map online tool are accurate and current.

The incumbent also conducts research, analysis, and compiles relevant sources of geospatial information to ensure MnDOT’s geospatial transportation data accurately reflects current roadway status and will be updated within the scheduled time frames.

This position is responsible for coordinating with MnDOT’s Communications Office and Minnesota Mississippi River Parkway Commission agency members.

Additionally, the position assists other special projects as assigned by the Office of Environmental Stewardship and may have infrequent or intermittent travel.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be in pursuit of a degree in Geography, GIS or Planning.
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills;
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite, database software, GIS technologies, ESRI software and knowledge of ArcGIS online technology;
  • Experienced in storyboard production or similar web mapping application and basic Java development skills;
  • Strong customer service, time management, and multitasking skills;
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Sophomores, juniors, or students who have at least one year or more left in school before completing their program.

Additional Seeds Program Qualifications:

Applicants must be a student in a college/university, trade or technical school. If a student is enrolled at a credit-granting institution he/she must carry at least six semester (nine quarter) credits. If enrolled at a non-credit granting institution or one that only offers one credit per class, a student must be taking two or more classes per semester/quarter. Any lesser credit (class) load shall be treated as a semester/quarter off. Graduate students must be enrolled in at least two courses or making progress on a dissertation. You will be asked to complete an Education Verification form prior to appointment.

Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5, or 3.0 for engineering students. You will be asked to provide a copy of your transcript to verify your GPA prior to being invited to interview.
