Position Description

Argonne’s Risk and Infrastructure Science Center (RISC) focuses on assuring the security and resilience of U.S. critical infrastructure and key resources that are threatened with disruption as a result of natural hazards, accidents, or deliberate acts such as terrorist attacks. The impacts of such disruptions—including impacts to human health and safety, the economy, and national security—must be understood for effective risk management. Argonne’s infrastructure science work incorporates physical and cyber security analysis databases and tools, modeling and simulation technologies, and expertise to support the entire preparedness spectrum: to prevent, protect against, mitigate, respond to, and recover from all hazards.

We are seeking an experienced analyst to help plan, organize, coordinate, and participate in the development, enhancement and implementation of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology in support of the National Security GIS group within the Risk and Infrastructure Science Center (RISC).

In this position, you will:

  • Assist in the design, development and creation of analytical GIS solutions as they apply to infrastructure system analysis, intelligence analysis, national and homeland security problems, emergency response situations and other spatially based activities
  • Maintain and expand expertise and capabilities in web-based and mobile GIS applications and solutions
  • Leverage knowledge of types and sources of data available for use in GIS, including United States Geological Survey (USGS), Census Tiger data, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), and remote sensing products such as SPOT and LANDSAT, as well as concepts of data structures (vector, raster, tabular) and their associated methodologies

Position Requirements

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (PT2 or PT3) dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills brought to the position, as well as the amount of relevant experience.  The basic requirements of the various levels are as follows:

  • At a PT2 Level: Bachelor’s  degree and 2+ years of relevant experience or equivalent
  • At a PT3 Level: Bachelor’s degree and 4+ years of relevant experience or equivalent

To be considered you must have:

  • Strong background with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial display systems supporting infrastructure assurance and modeling
  • Experience with existing systems including ESRI ArcGIS software, remote sensing software, open source GIS and web based mapping programs
  • A functional understanding of data development, spatial analysis, and computerized map production
