Position Description

Under the direction of the County Surveyor, the LTE Surveyor Assistant will assist in all aspects of surveying to reestablish and maintain survey monuments. The employee will also assist with scanning and maintenance of survey records within the department.  This is a limited term position that will be from May through August.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists in performing County Surveyor duties as defined by State Statutes 59.45   
  • Assists the County Surveyor in researching records and establishing, protecting, perpetuating and maintaining the monuments at the Section and Quarter Section corners of the Public Lands Survey System  (PLSS)               
  • Assists with the establishment of witness monuments for corners that have been set and retains the information that is pertinent in the County Surveyor’s office                                  
  • Assists the Surveyor with records and drawings of established corners, describing the manner in which they were determined
  • Assists the County Surveyor to protect, perpetuate and maintain other survey monumentation  
  • Assists the County Surveyor in performing various surveys of County owned lands
  • Assists with the scanning, indexing, filing and preserving of survey records  
  • Assists the County Surveyor in drafting Survey Maps and monument record tie sheets
  • Operates highly technical survey equipment such as total stations, computers, RTK GPS receivers, etc.
  • Provides access to Surveyor files regarding land surveys, supplies and copies of requested documents

 

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Possess and maintain valid Wisconsin Driver’s license

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management’s Manual of Surveying Instructions
  • Knowledge of Chapter 18 of the Jackson County Platting and Subdivision Ordinance
  • Knowledge of legal descriptions and the establishment of boundaries
  • Knowledge with principles and practices of surveying and civil engineering
  • Knowledge of Wisconsin laws, codes and provisions that relate to the practice of land surveying
  • Knowledge of zoning law and ordinance regulations
  • Knowledge of floodplain, shore land and wetland zoning regulations
  • Knowledge of general principles of the GIS and land information system
  • Knowledge in Global Positions System (GPS) technology
  • Knowledge of the use of land surveying field equipment
  • Knowledge of land surveying mathematics
  • Knowledge of route surveying, surveying of boundaries, and topographic surveys
  • Ability to carry and use equipment such as a total station, tripods, prisms, prism pole, data collector, GPS equipment, level rod, tape and brush cutting equipment
  • Ability and willingness to work under conditions which require exposure to environmental factors such as temperature variations and extremes, wetness, insects, dust, odors, noise, machinery and traffic hazards
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
