Description

The purpose of the Conservation, Planning & Zoning Intern is to provide seasonal assistance to the Conservation, Planning, & Zoning Department in Sauk County. This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) Summer Internship.

Essential Duties

Interns may be assigned to one of three different tracts.

The Conservation Engineering tract duties include:

  • Surveying, designing, and performing construction inspection on soil and water conservation practices
  • Monitoring project construction including approving material uses
  • Utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Geographic Planning Systems (GPS) to develop conservation plans and project maps
  • Completing project surveys       
  • Staking out soil and water conservation practices

The Conservation Planning tract duties include:

  • Utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to develop conservation plans and project maps
  • Completing project surveys     
  • Staking out soil and water conservation practices
  • Assisting with whole farm inventories and recommending conservation practices
  • Completing on-site farm visits to verify compliance with state agricultural performance             standards and Farmland Preservation Program requirements
  • Developing conservation plans using computer programs to assist landowners in meeting tolerable soil loss levels

The Planning and Zoning tract duties include:

  • Providing assistance to planning projects within the County
  • Completing inventories and documentation of conservation resource values
  • Assisting with zoning and shore land inspection and violation, mineral extraction, and landfill inventory
  • Aiding in the development and facilitation of focus group meetings, open houses, visioning sessions, and intergovernmental meetings related to the development of local government comprehensive plans
  • Drafting land use reports and other documents
  • Researching proposed zoning amendments

Minimum Training and Education

Required

  • Individual must be in the process of obtaining a Graduate, Undergraduate, or Associate’s degree in Agriculture, Natural Resources, Soil Science, Geography, Land Use Planning, or another related field
  • Valid Wisconsin State Motor Vehicle Operator’s License

Preferred

  • Sophomore, Junior, or Senior level student
