Job Summary:

The Zoning, Planning and Land Information Department has an opportunity for a GIS Coordinator to be responsible for the development, maintenance, coordination, support, and enhancement of La Crosse County’s Geographic Land Information System (GIS).  The position is the primary point of contact and driver behind all GIS efforts.  The ideal candidate for this position will have experience in project leadership, and considerable knowledge and experience with ArcGIS desktop and linked Microsoft Access and ArcSDE/SQL Server database functions.

Job Duties & Functions:

  • Coordinates GIS efforts in the Zoning, Planning & Land Information Department and Surveyor’s Department. 
  • Coordinates GIS efforts with other departments to determine needs and help fulfill those goals. 
  • Advises on how to best utilize county GIS, including mobile applications.
  • In coordination with IT staff, develops and maintains the county’s GIS mapping website.
  • Trains, advises and assists county employees as well as other governmental entities in GIS.
  • Helps define and implement long range plans & goals relating to development and maintenance of GIS.
  • Recommends effective system design, appropriate geoprocessing hardware/software and upgrades.
  • Provides back-up to the GIS Specialist/LIO in parcel mapping, maintenance of shapefiles and layers.
  • Prepares maps for the public, other departments and other political subdivisions upon request.
  • Coordinates and facilitates GIS group meetings.
  • Presents information at meetings/conferences as requested or required.
  • Helps administer data exchanges among governmental agencies as required.
  • Serves as a member of the La Crosse County Land Information Council (LIC).
  • Assists the public in best ways to utilize county GIS data.
  • Helps to create, acquire, maintain documents and administer geospatial data in the county’s central GIS data repository.
  • Assists with the coordination, implementation, and maintenance of the county’s Land Records Modernization Plan.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Four year college degree in the field of geographic/land information systems, geomatics, cartography, geography, surveying, engineering or related field.
  • One year experience in above fields, including experience with ArcSDE/SQL Server database functions.
  • Experience in collaborating with agencies, departments, co-workers and customers on short and long range projects.  
  • Ability to develop professional relationships to aid in collaboration.
  • Preference given to those applicants with project leadership experience.
