Position Summary:

This full-time employee performs day to day operations and maintenance on a multi-user automated law enforcement information system.  Work includes support for computer systems in Sheriff’s Department administrative offices, jail, Juvenile Center, and 911 Center.  Work involves maintenance of computer hardware and software for a complex law enforcement information system plus various related integrated systems.  Independent judgment and action is exercised in applying technical knowledge to maintain day to day system operations, perform problem analysis of system failures, provide technical support for users, develop and implement user training, and evaluate and recommend new or replacement equipment and software.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  •  Serves as primary department contact to resolve problems associated with Marathon County’s law enforcement and other related integrated software information systems; provides critical emergency technical assistance when needed; assists users in troubleshooting hardware and software problems by phone, email, or on-site visit; works with City-County Information Technology Commission to resolve more complex issues; provides on-call support as required.
  • Implements mapping conversion procedures to update critical E-911 systems on a timely basis; analyzes error reports to ensure accurate street/address changes for law enforcement, fire, and EMS responses.
  • Uses Geographical Information System (GIS) and other databases to research address problems related to the E-911 system; updates commercial E-911 records; gathers information to correct addresses, obtain new street addresses, etc., from townships, residents, Property Description, etc.
  • Reviews data entry done by Sheriff’s Department staff; creates and runs reports for identifying system errors and problems and quantifying workloads.
  • Sets up, configures, tests, and troubleshoots Sheriff’s Department hardware and software, sets up and maintains user ID’s, files, and access rights for law enforcement and related integrated systems.
  • Assists users with creating, transmitting, and legally retaining digital still photography, digital recorded audio, digital audio-visual recordings, and digital images of reports.
  • Creates, modifies, tests, and implements new agency codes, activity codes and facility codes needed for efficient management of the Adult and Juvenile Corrections facilities and 911 Dispatch Center.  Adjusts responder taskings in the Computer Aided Dispatch system as necessary to match changing agreements between different governmental bodies within the County. 
  • Assists department staff and other community law enforcement, fire, and emergency service agencies with file creation and maintenance, query execution, data entry, and other law enforcement system maintenance and monitoring procedures.
  • Develops and implements required forms and procedures for State Traffic and Criminal software (TraCS); monitors transmission of data to State and courts.
  • Gathers and analyzes information contained within the law enforcement system to create reports for staff review, management operational decisions, and open records requests.
  • Installs various programs on Mobile Data Computers (MDC); sets up wireless connectivity and user/security access codes; provides technical assistance as needed.
  • Administers department dictation system; creates user accounts, coding, and procedures for processing dictation work.
  • Develops, schedules, and implements in-service and other training programs on law enforcement, document imaging, and other related integrated systems for Sheriff’s Department staff and employees in other County departments and multi-agency law enforcement agencies as needed; prepares related technical documentation and reference materials to assist others with using law enforcement and various integrated systems.
  • Works with Sheriff’s Department staff and the City-County Information Technology Commission to research, evaluate, and recommend new or more effective hardware and software to meet department needs.
  • Maintains technical knowledge of PC and network technologies; attends related training sessions to remain current on new computer trends and techniques.
  • Develops solutions to work issues that add value for our customers.
  • Participates in establishing professional development goals that are supportive of broader County goals.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance; works extra hours as required.
  • Performs related work as required.

Education & Experience:

Associate’s degree in Computer Information Systems or closely related field plus one year paid work experience providing computer support to users in software operations and hardware problem solving as a significant part of job duties required; OR any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.  Experience operating, maintaining, or monitoring a law enforcement information system preferred.   

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of computer hardware, operating systems, office automation software, networking, and servers.
  • Ability to accurately perform duties in a fast-paced, high pressure environment, while performing varied tasks and prioritizing workload to meet required deadlines.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot hardware and software problems and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to learn law enforcement computer systems and applications and integrate knowledge in meeting the needs of the department.
  • Ability to seek out, identify, and correct system problems and data entry errors.
  • Ability to organize and maintain automated records, files, and system documentation, and ensure proper software access and security.
  • Ability to evaluate performance of software releases and make initial recommendations to appropriate department and management staff.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and present varied instructional procedures related to law enforcement information systemsn and other related integrated computer systems.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, vendor technical staff, and various community law enforcement, fire and emergency service agencies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.  
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
