WI-SDMS Translator

WI-SDMS Translator is a Windows software tool for transforming coordinate values between geographic (lat/long), State Plane Coordinates (SPC), Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM), Wisconsin Transverse Mercator (WTM), Wisconsin County Coordinate Systems (WCCS), and Wisconsin Coordinate Reference Systems (WISCRS).  Datums supported include NAD 27, NAD 83, NGVD 29, NAVD 88, the geoids (1999, 2003, 2009, 2012A), the horizontal control adjustments (1986, 1991, 1997, 2007, 2011), and the vertical control adjustments (1991, 2007, 2012). It also supports user-defined ASCII file formats as well as KML, SDMS, and a custom WisDOT WSI data format.

Important: WI-SDMS Translator is no longer maintained or supported by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. However, it still functions and is supported by Gene Hafermann, who previously worked for WisDOT.

You can download a copy of the installation file from here: (211MB Download)

After downloading the zip file, you MUST review the installation instructions found in the “help-file” folder included in the zip.  Note that installing v2.3.8 involves more than just running a setup file!  After running the setup file, you will have an installation of v2.3.6; some additional steps are necessary to “upgrade” the installation to v2.3.8.  If you prefer to watch a video for instructions, here is a link to a video Gene created that describes the process of installing and fully configuring v2.3.8 of WI-SDMS Translator.

Note to users: be aware of several issues listed below related to WI-SDMS Translator v2.3.8:

  • When converting between coordinate systems the program does not automatically process intermediate results. Therefore, if attempting to convert from NAD 27 to NAD 83 (1991), the user has to do this in two steps. They first have to go from NAD 27 to NAD 83 (1986) and then convert the interim file from NAD 83 (1986) to NAD 83  (1991).
  • The user guide (a PDF found in the program folder after installation) is not updated for v2.3.8, but little has changed from v2.3.6 except bug fixes.

For questions concerning downloading, installing, configuring, and using v2.3.8 of WI-SDMS Translator, please contact Gene Hafermann.  Gene maintains a Dropbox site containing a variety of information related to WI-SDMS that may be of interest to users.  The SCO is unable to provide support for this software.
