This handbook is a technical guide and resource for those who work with geospatial information in Wisconsin. It provides a brief overview of the history, evolution, and basics of Wisconsin’s coordinate reference systems, and compiles in one place the technical specifications for systems most commonly used in the state.

The WisDOT Geodetic Survey Unit has developed a Wisconsin Continuously Operating Reference Stations (WISCORS) Network consisting of permanent GPS sites, which provide real-time correctors to mobile users. Mobile users properly equipped to take advantage of these correctors can survey in the field to the 2-cm accuracy level in real-time.
The Wisconsin Height Modernization Program (HMP) is designed to improve the density of geodetic control stations listed in the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS) with accurate orthometric heights (elevations). The Wisconsin Dept. of Transportation (WisDOT), in cooperation with the National Geodetic Survey (NGS), initiated a program in 1998 to improve the height data throughout the State.
