Counties make strides toward imaging and indexing

Supported in part by the Wisconsin Land Information Program’s fees, almost all county Registers of Deeds have in recent years installed systems to image (scan) documents being filed, along with related systems to index land records by tract. According to information collected by the Wisconsin Register of Deeds Association, 66 of the state’s 72 counties have both systems in place (or will have by year’s end). Jane Licht, Dane County Register of Deeds said “Wisconsin’s rate of adoption of these technologies is higher than in any other state.”

As of March, 2004 only only four Wisconsin counties lacked imaging systems (Monroe, Price, Forest, and Florence). Seven counties lacked tract indexes (Florence, Grant, and Jefferson plus four others due to be completed in 2004).
