Dr. Sue Swanson appointed Wisconsin State Geologist

As announced on the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey (WGNHS) website, Dr. Sue Swanson has been appointed Director and State Geologist. She replaces Dr. Ken Bradbury, who retired in July 2022. Dr. Eric Carson served as Interim Director and State Geologist for the past year.

Sue joined WGNHS from Beloit College, where she was a professor of geology, chair of natural sciences, and Weeks Chair in Physical and Human Geography. Prior to becoming State Geologist, her research as a hydrogeologist included studying how groundwater moves through fractures in sedimentary bedrock aquifers, interactions between groundwater and surface water, and the hydrogeology of springs.

She will provide overall leadership, direction, and coordination for planning, implementation and evaluation of the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey programs.
