About the AGS Library

Article: UWM’s AGS library stores secrets in rare cartography

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the American Geographical Society Library’s (AGSL) arrival at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.  The occasion will be celebrated with a number of events on May 30th, including a talk by Michael Heffernan from the University of Nottingham (UK) on the mapping of Hispanic America.  An awards ceremony and celebratory dinner are scheduled for that evening.

The AGS Library is one of North America’s foremost geography and map collections. Formerly the library and map collection of the American Geographical Society (AGS) of New York, it was transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Libraries in 1978 following a nationwide selection process by the Society.

The AGSL collection now includes over one million items, including approximately 500,000 maps of all types covering the world at a wide range of scales, and over 9000 atlases ranging from 15th century editions of Ptolemy’s Geographia to the most modern compilations in paper or digital format. Books, journals, pamphlets, photographs, slides, Landsat images, and more recently, digital geospatial data, make up the remainder of their holdings.

The May 30th events will be held at the Golda Meir Library on the UW-Milwaukee campus .
