The Chazen Museum of Art is hosting a lecture entitled “The map is on the edge, the truth is in the margins” on Thursday, February 27, 2014 from 5:30-6:30 pm in room L140 of the Conrad A. Elvehjem building. The Museum is located at 750 University Avenue on UW-Madison campus.
The lecture will be given by art historian Dr. Sandra Sáenz-López Pérez, Centro de Ciencias Humanas y Sociales, Madrid, Spain, who was a 2012-13 David Woodward Fellow in the History of Cartography project at UW-Madison.
The lecture is being presented in conjunction with an exhibition entitled “Marginalia in cARTography” that runs from February 28 through May 18, 2014. According to the Chazen Museum website the exhibition “explores the visual discourse between marginal artistic images and the maps where they appear, as this marginalia sheds light on the content and purpose of the maps, their authors and patrons, and on the historical period when they were made.”
The lecture will be followed by a preview reception for the exhibition from 6:30 to 8:00 pm in the main lobby of the Museum.
The Map Society of Wisconsin will also host a presentation by Dr. Sáenz-López Pérez entitled “Marginalia in cARTography: Exploring the Edges of Maps” on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the American Geographical Society Library, located on the third floor of the UW-Milwaukee Golda Meir Library at 2311 E. Hartford Ave., Milwaukee. This talk is free and open to the public, and will be preceded by a reception at 1:30 pm.
Map lovers will also want to attend the presentation and tours of the Robinson Map Library and Geography Library in Science Hall on UW-Madison campus at 550 N. Park St. on March 4, 2014, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. The event includes a panel discussion from 5:30–6:30 pm with Sandra Sáenz-López Pérez; Jaime Stoltenberg, Map and Geospatial Data Librarian; Tom Tews, Geography Librarian; and Jude Leimer, Managing Editor, History of Cartography Project.
