At the Wisconsin Land Information Association’s (WLIA) annual conference last week, the State Cartographer’s Office (SCO) received first place in the WLIA’s “Interactive Map” competition. The award was for the Land Cover Field Reporter and Status applications developed as part of the ongoing land cover project. Thanks are due to all involved in the development of the apps, including AJ Wortley, Matt Bougie, Caitlin Wolters, Sam Schumacher, Jo Horton, and Carly Mertes.
In addition, Mitchell Johnson (SCO student employee) received the Best Student award for his map “Demographic Drive Time Analysis of Rural Hospitals.” The same map also received 2nd place in the Map Poster category.
Also, Jim Lacy, Associate State Cartographer received the “Outstanding Contribution” award acknowledging his contributions to the Association. This is a well-deserved award for Jim for all that he’s done and continues to do. Jim also serves as a member on the Board of Directors.
Daniel Huffman received the President’s Choice and Most Unique awards for “An Unfurling of Lake Michigan.”
Evan Applegate received 1st place for “True, Pretty, Fast” in the Map Poster category.
Meghan Kelly was awarded 2nd place for “Borders: An Atlas of Syrian Border Crossings” in the Map Book or Atlas category.
And finally, Chelsea Nestel received 2nd place for “Paranormal Madison” in the Most Unique category.

UW-Madison staff and students collectively received more awards than any other organization at the annual WLIA competition. Congrats to all!
