PLSS notebook scans viewable on the web

The original government survey of Wisconsin (1832-1866) is documented in fragile field notebooks. These historic documents have been scanned and can now be searched and viewed through a web browser.

Through a cooperative project between the Wis. Board of Commissioners of Public Lands (BCPL) and the UW-Madison’s General Library System, scanning, database organization, and web-searching tools were accomplished. The web site includes background information on the survey and records themselves.

Custodianship of the original survey records is vested in the BCPL. Related products of the survey, plat maps drawn shortly after the field work was done, have also been scanned and will be added to the web site in 2004.
